WARNING

The use of improper snow chains or the incorrect  
placement of the chains can cause accidents and  
serious injuries.

system, the system must be re-adapted after  
mounting snow chains ÿ p. 334.

Volkswagen recommends inquiring about the proper  
size of wheels, tires and snow chains at one of its  
dealers.  
As far as possible, use fine link chains that do not  
protrude more than 13.5mm including the padlock.

Before installing the chains, remove the wheel caps  
and trim rings ÿ . However, for safety reasons the  
wheel bolts must be fitted with caps, which can be  
purchased from Volkswagen dealers.  
Using snow chains with the emergency wheel  
or inflatable spare wheel fitted For technical  
reasons, the use of snow chains on the emergency  
wheel and inflatable spare wheel is not permitted ÿ p.

— In the event of a front wheel failure, mount the  
spare wheel or inflatable spare wheel on the rear  
axle.

wheel on the rear axle. When doing so, take into  
account the direction of rotation of the tire.

must be refitted after changing the wheel.

Remove: Take out the wire hook from the on-  
board tools ÿ p. 299 and insert it into a hole (light  
alloy wheel) or hook it to the edge (steel wheel) of  
the hubcap ÿ fig. 246.  
The full hubcap protects the wheel bolts and must be  
remounted after changing the wheel.  
— Pull the hubcap in the direction of the arrow.  
Remove the full hubcap  
Fit: press the hubcap against the rim until you  
feel it click into place.  
— Take the wheel wrench and wire hook from the on-  
board tools ÿ p. 299.  
— Hook the wire hook into one of the holes in  
the hubcap.  
Vehicles with center hubcaps that can be  
removed by turning  
— Insert the wheel wrench through the hook on the  
wire ÿ fig. 248 and pull the hubcap in the direction  
of the arrow.  
Removing: Turn the hubcap to the left or to the  
right until it detaches from the rim ÿ fig. 247.  
— Insert your hand behind one of the pes  
tabs and pull the hubcap.  
Install the integral hubcap  
— Check that the anti-theft wheel bolt is mounted in  
the correct position ÿ p. 353.  
Fit: Place the hubcap over the center of  
rim.  
— Press the hubcap onto the rim by making  
match the valve hole with the tire valve ÿ fig. 248  
— Press the hubcap against the rim until it clicks.

Changing a wheel can be dangerous, especially  
if it is done at the edge of the road. To reduce the  
risk of serious injury, observe the following: · Stop

The caps protect the wheel bolts and must be  
pushed back in as far as they will go after changing  
the wheel.  
· To change a wheel, always use suitable tools  
and in perfect condition.  
· To reduce the risk of the vehicle rolling  
accidentally, always switch off the engine,  
always apply the electronic parking brake and  
always place the selector lever in position P or  
always engage a gear if the transmission is  
manual.  
Removing and installing the caps  
Remove: Take out the wire hook from the on-  
board tools ÿ p. 299.  
— Insert the wire hook into the hole in the hood ÿ  
fig. 249 and pull in the direction of the arrow.  
· After changing a wheel, order immediately  
Check the torque of the wheel bolts with a  
perfectly working torque wrench.  
Fitting: Push the caps onto the wheel bolts as  
far as they will go.  
The anti-theft wheel bolt has a different cap, which  
is only compatible with the anti-theft wheel bolt and  
is not suitable for conventional bolts.  
· On vehicles equipped with the tire monitoring  
system, the system must be re-adapted  
immediately after changing a wheel ÿ p. 334.
