not allowed to make technical modifications to the
exhaust gas purification system that influence the
purification of exhaust gases carried out by AdBlue® .
Introduction to the topic
The relevant components for exhaust gases reduce
polluting emissions:
If the AdBlue® expressly authorized by Volkswagen
according to ISO-22241-1 is not used or refilled, the
vehicle will not conform to the certificate of conformity
issued for this type of vehicle.
— AdBlue® ÿ p. 294 —
Catalyst ÿ p. 297 —
Particle filter (depending on equipment) ÿ p. 297
Using the vehicle without the AdBlue® prescribed
by Volkswagen may be punishable.
If the exhaust gas cleaning system is not used as
intended, exhaust gas emissions may worsen.
WARNING
Exhaust gases contain carbon monoxide, which
can cause unconsciousness and death.
Information regarding AdBlue®
· Do not leave the engine running in closed spaces

The AdBlue® consumption depends on the driving
style, the operating temperature and the ambient
temperature. On the instrument panel screen you

· Do not leave the vehicle with the engine running
Since AdBlue® freezes from -11 °C (+13 °F), if
the temperature is very low, there may be limitations
when refueling. The system is heated while driving
to ensure exhaust gas purification even at very low
temperatures.
unattended.
WARNING
The exhaust system components become extremely
hot and this can cause a fire.
AdBlue® must be charged regardless of whether the
services are performed, as it may be required more
frequently or between service intervals.
· Park the vehicle so that no exhaust system
component comes into contact with easily
flammable materials that may be found under the
vehicle, such as dry grass.
Never allow the AdBlue® tank to empty completely ÿ
p. 298.
· Never use additional protection for the underbody
of the vehicle or anti-corrosion products for the
exhaust pipes, catalytic converters, particulate
filters or thermal insulators.

the engine. Not using the start help either!
If this message is ignored, from a remaining range
of 1000 km the yellow control indicator will light up
The instrument panel display will show the indication

possible to start the engine again .
· Add enough AdBlue® when there is a range of
approx. 1000 km, at the latest.
If the yellow control lamp is ignored, when a
remaining range of 0 km is displayed, it will no
longer be possible to start the engine again. The red
warning light will come on.
· Never drain the AdBlue® tank completely .
WARNING
Warning and indication system in case of failure
Incorrect handling of AdBlue® can cause damage to
the vehicle that is excluded from the legal guarantee.
If the exhaust gas purification system has a fault or
has been filled with AdBlue® that does not comply
with the ISO-22241-1 standard, the white or yellow
control lamps light up. When the yellow conctormoleligohnt,sa
range of 1000 km remains.
Use only AdBlue® that meets the standard
ISO 22241-1.
· Never mix AdBlue® with water, fuel,
ble or additives.
· Never fill AdBlue® in the gas tank

· Do not carry the refill bottle permanently in the
vehicle. In the event of a leak, due to temperature
changes or damage to the bottle, the AdBlue®
ATTENTION
could damage the interior of the vehicle.
AdBlue® is an irritant and corrosive liquid that can
cause damage to the skin, eyes and respiratory
organs if it comes into contact with them.
Refill AdBlue®
· Before using AdBlue® ,
observe the instructions
for use. If you follow the instructions for use
correctly, it is unlikely that you will come into
contact with AdBlue® .
Note and , on page 291, and , at the beginning
of this chapter, on page 294.
· Store AdBlue® only in the tightly closed original
container. Never use empty food cans, bottles
or other containers.
· Always store AdBlue® in a safe place, out of the
reach of children.
· If AdBlue® comes into contact with your eyes,
rinse immediately with plenty of water for at
least 15 minutes and seek medical attention.

Refueling with a pump gun The
AdBlue® tank can be filled at all AdBlue® pumps .
Do not add fuel and AdBlue® at the same time.
— The AdBlue® dispenser gun works like a fuel
dispenser gun.
— Keep the handle of the AdBlue® dispenser gun
downwards to ensure optimal refueling ÿ fig. 207
.
B — The AdBlue® tank is full when the nozzle
shuts off the supply for the first time ÿ .
If a truck pump is used, the supply may be shut off
earlier. There is a danger of the AdBlue® leaking
out , since the filling speed of these dispensers is
considerably higher ÿ .

refuel with a jerry can
with a refill bottle or a nozzle (schematic illustration).
— Open the canister and use the built-in spout to
fill the AdBlue® tank .
— The tank is full when the AdBlue® reaches the
level of the filler neck. Do not overfill the AdBlue®
tank ÿ .

prepare refueling
— Close the fuel tank flap.
The AdBlue® filler neck is located behind the fuel
tank flap, next to the fuel filler neck ÿ fig. 206.
— Just switch on the ignition and leave it on
for at least 30 seconds for the system to detect the
charge.
— Park the vehicle on a level surface and
switch off the ignition.
— Then start the engine.
— Open the fuel tank cap.
WARNING
— Unscrew the cap from the AdBlue® filler neck .
Adding too much AdBlue® can damage the tank
system and the vehicle.
— Use only AdBlue® that meets the standard
ISO 22241-1.
· Do not refuel more than the maximum amount
indicated on the instrument panel display.
Refuel with a refill bottle
· If AdBlue® is spilled , clean it
up as soon as
possible with a damp cloth and plenty of cold
water.
Please note the expiration date, directions and
manufacturer's information on the refill bottle.
· Remove any AdBlue® that has crystallized with
hot water and a sponge.
— Unscrew the cap from the refill bottle.
— Place the bottle in the Ad Blue® filler neck and
screw it on tightly.
Dispose of the refill bottle in an environmentally
friendly manner.
— Keep the bottle pressed.
You can purchase suitable AdBlue® refill
bottles from Volkswagen dealers.
— The AdBlue® tank is full when no more liquid
comes out of the bottle ÿ .
— Unscrew the bottle.

If misfires occur while driving, there is a loss of power
or the engine does not turn correctly, reduce speed
immediately, go to a specialized workshop and have
the vehicle checked ÿ p. 298. In these cases, unburned
fuel residues can get into the exhaust system and thus

WARNING
— Drive at at least 60 km/h at an engine speed of at
least 2000 rpm. Thus raising the temperature, soot
can burn in the filter.
If unexpected maneuvers are carried out for
other road users, accidents may occur.
· Always adapt your speed and driving style to
the visibility, weather, road and traffic
conditions.
— Do not complete the regeneration run until the

Irregular engine operation and anomalies
If while driving the engine does not turn correctly or
anomalies arise, it could be due to poor fuel quality:
Combustion failures
— Immediately reduce speed.
The yellow control lamp flashes.
Misfires occur that can damage the vehicle.
— Go to the nearest specialized workshop for an
intermediate speed and avoid subjecting the
engine to great efforts.
— Go to the nearest specialized workshop.

The particulate filter is saturated with soot and needs
to be regenerated.
Requirement for the regeneration run: The engine is
at operating temperature.
For gasoline engines
— Drive at a speed of at least 80 km/h.
— Take your foot completely off the accelerator
