exhaust gas purification
not allowed to make technical modifications to the
exhaust gas purification system that influence the
purification of exhaust gases carried out by AdBlue® .
Introduction to the topic
The relevant components for exhaust gases reduce
polluting emissions:
If the AdBlue® expressly authorized by Volkswagen
according to ISO-22241-1 is not used or refilled, the
vehicle will not conform to the certificate of conformity
issued for this type of vehicle.
— AdBlue® ÿ p. 294 —
Catalyst ÿ p. 297 —
Particle filter (depending on equipment) ÿ p. 297
Using the vehicle without the AdBlue® prescribed
by Volkswagen may be punishable.
If the exhaust gas cleaning system is not used as
intended, exhaust gas emissions may worsen.
WARNING
Exhaust gases contain carbon monoxide, which
can cause unconsciousness and death.
Information regarding AdBlue®

· Do not leave the vehicle with the engine running
Since AdBlue® freezes from -11 °C (+13 °F), if
the temperature is very low, there may be limitations
when refueling. The system is heated while driving
to ensure exhaust gas purification even at very low
temperatures.
unattended.
WARNING
The exhaust system components become extremely
hot and this can cause a fire.
AdBlue® must be charged regardless of whether the
services are performed, as it may be required more
frequently or between service intervals.
· Park the vehicle so that no exhaust system
component comes into contact with easily
flammable materials that may be found under the
vehicle, such as dry grass.
Never allow the AdBlue® tank to empty completely ÿ
p. 298.
· Never use additional protection for the underbody
of the vehicle or anti-corrosion products for the
exhaust pipes, catalytic converters, particulate
filters or thermal insulators.

Warning and indication system in case of failure
Incorrect handling of AdBlue® can cause damage to
the vehicle that is excluded from the legal guarantee.
If the exhaust gas purification system has a fault or
has been filled with AdBlue® that does not comply
with the ISO-22241-1 standard, the white or yellow
control lamps light up. When the yellow conctormoleligohnt,sa

· Do not carry the refill bottle permanently in the
vehicle. In the event of a leak, due to temperature
changes or damage to the bottle, the AdBlue®
ATTENTION
could damage the interior of the vehicle.
AdBlue® is an irritant and corrosive liquid that can
cause damage to the skin, eyes and respiratory
organs if it comes into contact with them.
Refill AdBlue®
· Before using AdBlue® ,
observe the instructions
for use. If you follow the instructions for use
correctly, it is unlikely that you will come into
contact with AdBlue® .
Note and , on page 291, and , at the beginning
of this chapter, on page 294.
· Store AdBlue® only in the tightly closed original
container. Never use empty food cans, bottles
or other containers.
· Always store AdBlue® in a safe place, out of the
reach of children.
· If AdBlue® comes into contact with your eyes,
rinse immediately with plenty of water for at
least 15 minutes and seek medical attention.

— Open the fuel tank cap.
WARNING
— Unscrew the cap from the AdBlue® filler neck .
Adding too much AdBlue® can damage the tank
system and the vehicle.
— Use only AdBlue® that meets the standard
ISO 22241-1.
· Do not refuel more than the maximum amount
indicated on the instrument panel display.
Refuel with a refill bottle
· If AdBlue® is spilled , clean it
up as soon as
possible with a damp cloth and plenty of cold
water.
Please note the expiration date, directions and
manufacturer's information on the refill bottle.
· Remove any AdBlue® that has crystallized with
hot water and a sponge.
— Unscrew the cap from the refill bottle.
— Place the bottle in the Ad Blue® filler neck and
screw it on tightly.
Dispose of the refill bottle in an environmentally
friendly manner.
— Keep the bottle pressed.
You can purchase suitable AdBlue® refill
bottles from Volkswagen dealers.
