Maintenance - Edition 01.2019  
A - Do not top up oil.  
B - Oil can be replenished up to area -A-.  
C - Oil must be replenished. The oil level must then be at least in  
the upper half of the measuring area -B-.  
– If oil level is above -A- marking, drain or extract excess oil in  
order to avoid damage to catalytic converter.  
– If the oil level is below marking -C- replenish a sufficient  
amount of oil (at least 0.5 l) ⇒ page 116 .

Engine oil: draining or extracting  
Special tools and workshop equipment required  
♦ Used oil collector and extractor - VAS 6622A-  
♦ Oil spill cloth  
Engine oil: draining or extracting  
Carry out following procedure:  
Note  
For engines with standing oil filter, the oil filter must be re‐  
newed before changing the engine oil. When the filter element  
is removed, a valve is opened. The oil in filter housing auto‐  
matically flows into crankcase.  
If the engine oil is drained and not extracted with an used oil  
collection and extraction unit , replace drain plug. This pre‐  
vents leaks.  
Please observe disposal instructions!  
– Extract engine oil using used oil collection and extraction unit  
- VAS 6622A- .

Or  
– If necessary, remove “lower” engine cover panel (noise insu‐  
lation) ⇒ page 109 .  
– Remove oil drain plug.  
– Let engine oil drain.  
Note  
Please observe disposal instructions!  
– Screw in oil drain plug together with seal hand-tight and then  
tighten to specified torque.

Specified torques for oil drain plug:  
♦ M14: 30 Nm  
♦ M24: 50 Nm  
WARNING  
♦ Torque specifications must not be exceeded.  
♦ Excessive torque can cause leaks in the area of the oil  
drain plug or even damage.

♦ Torque wrench - V.A.G 1331-  
Removing  
Note  
Prevent engine oil from dripping onto components.  
Cover alternator with cloth before removing.  
– Loosen oil filter -arrow- first, using a strap or oil filter tool -  
3417- before removing oil filter completely.  
– Wait a few minutes, so that engine oil can flow back from filter  
into engine.  
– Then remove oil filter.  
Caution  
When removing oil filter, make certain that the old seal is also  
removed and is not stuck to the valve timing housing.  
Ensure that no engine oil drips onto poly V-belt or alternator.  
Installing  
Note  
Observe fitting instructions on oil filter!  
Please observe disposal instructions!  
– Clean oil filter sealing surface on valve timing housing.  
– Lightly oil seal on new filter.  
– Screw new oil filter -arrow- in by hand.  
– Then tighten to 20 Nm.

Oil filter: renewing, 1.8 l TSI and 2.0 l TSI  
engines  
Special tools and workshop equipment required  
♦ Oil filter tool - 3417-  
♦ Torque wrench - V.A.G 1331-  
Removing  
– Loosen oil filter cartridge -arrow- using oil filter tool - 3417- .  
– Loosen filter by a few turns. Wait a few seconds to allow the  
oil between filter and housing to flow back into sump. Now  
unscrew filter completely.  
Note  
Please observe disposal instructions!  
Installing  
– Clean sealing surface before installing oil filter cartridge.  
– Oil rubber seal lightly on new filter. This ensures best possible  
sealing when the filter is tightened.  
– Tighten filter to 22 Nm using torque wrench - V.A.G 1331- .
