4.61.1
General information
Towing eyes/fastening rings are used to secure vehicles on trans‐
porters or during shipping.
The towing eyes/tie-down rings are screwed into the towing eye
brackets.
•
Tie-down rings must be removed from the vehicle and scrap‐
ped prior to vehicle delivery.
•
Add-on parts removed to install the towing eyes/tie-down rings
must be reinstalled again.
– Ascertain which rings are installed on the vehicle to determine
which rings have to be scrapped.
Caution
Do not place tie-down rings in the vehicle tool kit under any
circumstances.
Externally, towing eyes and fastening rings are distinguished by
the fact that fastening rings -1- and -2- have no surface protection
and are designed as welded parts.
The long version of the tie-down ring -1- has the part number 3C0
802 994 A.
The short version of the tie-down ring -2- has the part number 3C0
802 994.
In contrast, the towing eye -3- has surface protection and is a
forged part, i.e. no weld seams are visible.
The towing eye is part of the onboard tools in the luggage com‐
partment. It is not permissible to scrap it.
Note
Vehicles which are factory-fitted with a towing attachment have
no mounting bracket for the screw-in towing eye.
♦ The cover caps are fitted with a retaining strap. They are cov‐
ered with adhesive tape to protect them against damage.
